La alegría ya viene
In other words, happiness is on its way. As I saw on the news this morning that today marks the 22nd anniversary of the plebiscite in which Chileans voted no to continuing Pinochet’s dictatorship, a story which was followed by yet another positive update on the situation of the miners who’re trapped in the North but will hopefully be freed by the end of next week, I thought that sharing this video would be the most appropriate post for today.
In the run-up to the plebiscite, the campaña para el NO – no to Pinochet, no to dictatorship – wasn’t exactly openly embraced by the state-run media. Both sides, however, were allowed to broadcast their slick-for-the-times publicity videos, and even if you don’t speak Spanish you can enjoy the cheese-tastic 80′s-ness of this one. Warning: the song is catchy as all hell. But I guess there are worse things than spending all day humming to yourself that happiness is on its way.

Holy cheese-stastic commercial! I can definitely appreciate it though because now we can look back and completely get the entire intended message. Thanks for posting this. I always love a good history lesson and overview!

I guess since I was not living in Chile at that time, I never heard of this commercial. There will always be those pro and against the Pinochet Government. His government changed the attitude of Chileans forever.
The greatest legacy of his time in power is that mass killings of civilians can not ever be justified, regardless of circumstances.
