Christmas in July

The past few Christmases have been spent here in Chile. I don’t feel like I’ve been slighted – we’ve still seen my family plenty and been to the US at least once a year, and it’s just worked out that it’s made sense to stay put for December – but there’s still nothing like going home for the holidays. Which is why I’m very excited to share that it’s official:

We’re spending Christmas 2011 in England!

There was never any question in my mind of this happening, but it’s still nice to finally have plane tickets confirmed. I should probably get around to discussing this with my boss soon too…

Last time we went to England at Christmas, we spent a great couple of days in London and made a stop at Windsor Castle as well. We also spent plenty of time hanging out at my dad’s house in Cheshire, but we didn’t do much exploring beyond that. Rodolfo was working on his thesis, which made finding free time for side-trips tough.

This time, however, we’ll be spending more time in London and heading to some other English cities. York? Liverpool? I seeee youuuu. Plus now that we’ve got our tickets to and from England set, we can start planning a little side-trip to somewhere else in Europe. I foresee some more racing around trying to fit everything in, but I’m determined to avoid the stress and focus on the excitement. England for the first time in three years!

I think it’s time to start wishing for a white Christmas.

You should visit a Christmas market! The ones in Vienna and Prague are awesome, and anywhere in Germany. We are spending Christmas in England as well (and New Years in York!) and taking our 3 year old son to Belgium for a Christmas market.

    Have fun!

Oooh, good luck..hope it doesn’t snow..! Last year I got stuck on the motorway in a small car for 7 hours with my brother, his girlfriend and their 9 month old baby (but fortunately arrived in England the day before they cancelled everyone’s flights for 5 days). That was fun. And the year before, it was 8 hours stuck on a coach. Also fun. England just doesn’t do Winter very well. I think I might do a warm-weather Christmas this year. Although, once I finally made it to where I was going, the snow and clear blue skies was much, much nicer than the damp drizzle that is the usual weather at that time of year.

I’m over here now enjoying the sunshine and greenery- my first Summer in England for 3 years. I always forget how beautiful England can be when there are leaves on the trees and you can sit outside at the pub.

No, I want it to snow! Last time we were there we had a couple inches in time for Christmas, but it wasn’t bad enough to cause problems. I would like that exact amount of snow again – not that I’m picky or anything :)

      • Matt says:

haha, I don’t know…a couple of inches can bring the entire country to a standstill. But as long as you’re already where you’re supposed to be, Christmas snow is lovely.

WOAH. I can’t believe it’s been 3 years already!!! I feel like you were just there with Rosa.

And YAY, you can use that guide I gave you finally! I’m so excited for you to have this all made official now!

    • Emily says:

I can’t believe it’s been that long either – it really doesn’t feel like it. And yes, I’m excited to whip out my little luxury guide too, even if all we do is window shop at the stores it recommends!

  4. Eeeeek so excited!!! And I agree with the comment above, visiting a European Xmas market is a MUST.

    • Emily says:

I’m definitely going to look into them. So far my idea had been Copenhagen to try to meet up with a friend who lives near there, but nothing’s set in stone.

Cool!! When are you going exactly?! I’ll be spending Christmas in Berlin with my boyfriend’s family, but as you know, I’m going to be living in London, so hopefully I can catch you in London-town before or after I go to Germany!!! :-)

  6. Christmas in England sounds like it could be a lot of fun! I agree with you a little snow is great and I dont think thats being picky…lol

How exciting! I was in the UK for Christmas last year and I sooo wish I could afford to fly there again this year. There’s something very special about a very English christmas! Xmas TV specials! Wine! Good friends! Snow (sometimes)! V different to Xmas in Australia!

The Queen’s speech! Oh wait no, that one isn’t quite as exciting, although I am still required to watch it. And to eat one brussels sprout. Other than that though, English Christmases are lovely.

  8. The UK always feels so much more Christmas-y than anywhere else I’ve been in December. This is me being jealous!

I was wondering what you’d be up to when you mentioned the flurry of recent England posts :-) Will look forward to hearing about Christmas!

Just heading back to see family but sneaking some travel adventures in there too – the perfect combination.

How exciting! I so know what that’s like, having Christmas in the middle of summer. Festive BBQs just don’t do it for me…

Everyone’s heading over here to Britain at the end of the year and I’m leaving it to go to Mexico. Crazy stuff!

Liverpool = I was born just outside the city. Woop woop! And, seriously, I love that you’re spending Christmas in my homeland. So excited for you, hun. :D

    • Emily says:

Liverpool’s fun, but I haven’t been for years, so I’m looking forward to hopefully getting back there.

      • Ceri says:

The only thing I will add about Liverpool is be careful. It’s pretty rough in quite a few areas.

But, seriously, London is one of my favourite cities so I hope you take lots of pictures and have a fun one. :)
