Summer in Chile

It’s here! Now, I realize that we may still be in for some cool weather. Possibly even a rain cloud or two. But the past few days have been nothing short of glorious, and when you consider that last year it rained through November, that alone is something to celebrate.

September 18th more or less marks the end of winter. People talk about having “survived August” in reference to the fact that it’s usually the last month with real cold that might just pick off some little old people. But it’s the 18th, not the 1st, of September which gets people in that happy spring frame of mind, and this year the weather’s decided to cooperate, at least temporarily.

So how can I be so sure that winter, my sworn enemy, is on it’s way north for another year?

Mote con huesillo

Sunglasses. Short sleeves (and yes, there is a sweater over my shoulder, but the point is that I didn’t need it). Mote con huesillo, the ultimate Chilean summer drink. Yup, I’m a happy camper. And I say that without even taking into consideration all the fun I had this weekend – stay tuned!

  1. I had a mote con huesillo today as well! Viva el verano!

Yum! Definitely one thing I miss about working downtown…you could always tell summer was coming when the mote con huesillo carts started popping up on the street corners.

Ohhhh that sounds so good right now! Now that things are cooling off in the US I am dreaming of Chile! I need to get back there ASAP!

  3. Kyle says:

    Cute cute sunnies!

  4. Jenn says:

Can’t wait to try this one, too! (Still figuring out how I can make chicha at home :)

    • Emily says:

Haha, you should totally start a little microbrewery! I think you’re going to have to go out to the countryside and find a family that makes chica and ask them to take you on as an apprentice.

Yaaay! Enjoy it =) Here in Europe it feels like summer just won’t quit…not that I’m complaining, but I’m never a fan of the sun and sightseeing combo

    • Emily says:

I remember wandering around Italy, Greece and Croatia in a heatwave and just melting every day. After a couple days I just got used to it, but between the sweat and the water I poured over my head every 5 minutes it was definitely some damp sightseeing.

  6. And I’m over here praying for colder weather haha. I’m so over these 90+ days!!! You look too cute in that pic!

    • Emily says:

I try to remember not to complain about the heat ever since I bitch and moan so much about the cold, but I’m sure that after all the heat you guys have had this summer even I would be ready for winter!

  7. Yay!!! Shorts and t-shirts it is, then!!! I’ll be in Santiago this time next week!!! Can’t wait to meet you!

    • Emily says:

Don’t get too excited – we’re still having cold nights and even some chilly days. But you should get some high temperatures and sunshine as well.

I’ve been reading your blog for years, but this may be the first time I’ve actually commented… I just to say that I just saw you and Rodolfo on “House Hunters International!” So cool! (and I love your blog!).

  9. Abby says:

You look soo happy! As you know, I also dread the “w” word.

    • Emily says:

Oh yes, that is the pure unadulterated joy of warmth on my skin. I think I need to follow your lead and move to a desert at some point in order to escape winter.
