Guest post: The London experience: where to go and what to do in the capital

The tourist destination of choice for over 14 million people worldwide, London has plenty to offer for visitors. Accommodation such as Marlin apartments Canary Wharf provides an excellent place to stay. However, when you’ve sorted out short term accommodation London has so much to offer, so finding the first place to visit is always tricky. Luckily, we’ve come up with a few places of interest that are worth seeing.

London from up high

One of the most popular attractions in the capital is the London Eye. As one of the world’s tallest Ferris wheels, the views span as much as 24 miles, with clear views of all the city’s major landmarks. A full rotation of the Eye takes around half an hour. If you want to save money, booking tickets online is generally cheaper than buying them on the day. Cheaper still is a visit to the Monument, which sits just a few minutes’ walk away.

Museums for free

London has a plethora of free museums. If money’s a bit tight, then visiting Tate Modern, the National History Museum, Science Museum, National Gallery, Royal Observatory and National Maritime Museum won’t cost you a penny. The Tate is perhaps the best of the lot, featuring high-profile exhibitions from great artists throughout the ages.

West End entertainment

Packed with theatres, London’s West End plays host to productions from all genres. Catching a show is a must, and there’s usually something for everyone, from classic musicals like Cats to modern shows such as Shrek. Many theatres offer heavily discounted tickets, so it’s worth looking around Leicester Square’s many box offices or online.

London by water or walkway

Providing the weather is nice, a boat trip up and down the Thames is perhaps the best way to see London on both sides of the river. If that doesn’t take your fancy, then walking around central London costs nothing, and you don’t have to follow a set route to see what you want, whether it’s Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, the packed shops of Oxford Street or the Houses of Parliament.

London: the best bar none

If you somehow get bored of looking at landmarks, then London has much, much more to offer. The city has the UK’s only permanent ice bar, a glorious rooftop bar overlooking Trafalgar Square, countless music venues, and, most bizarrely of all, a restaurant where you dine in the dark. Boredom is something you’ll never experience if you visit London.
