Saturday in Santiago: Santiago sunset
Last weekend, it rained pretty much non-stop from Friday onward. I normally don’t like rain, but there is something I like even less: pollution. The smog layer that develops over Santiago in winter is enough to make even me pray for the cleansing rains that bring a day or two of fresh air. And the upside of the combination of contamination and a break in the clouds was one amazing Santiago sunset.
It started with fallen leaves and gorgeous light…
and ended with this riot of color.
Maybe winter in Santiago isn’t so bad after all.

Saturday in Santiago

That sky in the last photo is UNREAL. Love all of these!
It was really breathtaking – enough to get me out of the house to capture it with the camera.
Gorgeous sunset – great job with those pictures – that is one good thing when it rains in Santiago…you can breath easier and the sky is just spectacular over the mountains
The air quality after the rain is SO nice, and the Andes always look beautiful with snowy peaks and a bright blue backdrop.
What’s the winter feel like there?
I love sunset pictures. The picture here I like most though is of the Autumn leaves that fell; it is beautiful.
As far as colors go, Autumn is always my favorite time of year.
Winter is usually in the low 40s during the day, but with no central heating (more modern buildings have it, but a lot of people still don’t use it because it’s expensive) and damp air, it can chill you pretty well through.
And thanks, I love the thick blanket of leaves too!
Your sunset photos are fantastic. I love the one with the mountains over the city.
Also, I am beyond jealous. I could use some fall weather right now.
Thank you! Nature definitely gave my budding photograpy skills a hand.
And would you like my fall weather? Sunsets aside, I’d be happy with eternal summer, so let’s trade!
Autumn sunsets in Chile are awesome. Not long until we can add skiing to these sunsets!
I have to admit that I haven’t been skiing since I studied abroad in 2005! Between having been spoiled by the slopes back home in Tahoe, the cost here and the fact that I don’t love it enough for that cost to be worth it, I only made it up twice.
Ooh that last photo is stunning Emily.
Thank you!
absolutely love the colours and clouds in the last photo… a bit ominous too. great shot.
and do enjoy your winter…
stay adventurous, Craig
Thanks and welcome, Craig!
Absolutely gorgeous!!!!!! You should frame that last one!
I may just have to! Or at least set it as my desktop background to calm me on particularly stressful days
I thought sunsets in general in Chile were amazing – it’s a west coast thing. Perth and California have the same allure for me for that reason.
You’re so right. I really have been spoiled with sunsets everywhere I’ve lived.
Beautiful colors! I love sunsets!
Thanks, me too!
Gorgeous sunset! I’m a sucker for pretty sunset pictures
Me too! There’s really something magical about a great sunset.
I’m a sucker for sunsets and I loved Santiago. Think I need to get back soon. Nice photos Emily!
Thanks, Pete! You guys should come back for southern hemisphere summer to escape the cold up north.
I love sunsets! (Ok who doesn’t?) Great photos! I was only in Santiago for about 36 hours a few years ago, but I did get to see the sunset there, and it was beautiful.
You should come back and see more!
Those leaves are gorgeous! Fall colors are so romantic. One of the only things I miss about living in a place with seasons.
I like seasons for about a month because it’s fun to pull out the boots and sweaters, and then I’m ready for warmth again. But this was a pretty perfect fall day!
I always love photo’s of leaves, it reminds me of the first time I traveled abroad. I was in Japan in Autumn and all the leaves were such brilliant colours falling from the trees.
That sounds beautiful. I never hear about Japan in autumn since everyone’s so focused on the cherry blossoms, but I’m sure those same trees like great in fall too.
I love days and not nights, but I love sunset and sunset pictures.
There’s something special about a good sunset, even though I do appreciate daylight.
