Capture the Colour

Thanks to Natalie from Near Afar, I’ve been asked to participate in Travel Supermarket’s Capture the Colour contest. Having seen some of the competition, I don’t kid myself that these will be the winning shots, but who knows, maybe one of the judges shares my passion for the mesmerizing jellyfish exhibit in Monterey.

Blue

Sea nettle jellies

I know I’ve said it before, but really, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is just spectacular. I could watch the jellies pulse across the viewing window for hours.

Green

Lone apple

On a stormy late winter day on a farm in southern Chile, pops of green like this single apple hinted at spring being just around the corner. Of course, shortly after I took this picture it proceeded to pour down for the rest of the day, keeping us firmly huddled around the wood burning stove, but only a month later the farm was a riot of new growth.

Yellow

Cocktail at Mott Buenos Aires

After a long day of a sunrise flight followed by eating, gabbing and shopping with a girlfriend, a restorative drink was just what the doctor ordered. My passion fruit caipirinha from trendy Buenos Aires bar Mott was as delicious as it was beautiful.

White

Little Venice Mykonos

I dug this one from the archives – 2006, to be exact. Before starting our last year of college, one of my best friends and I Eurotripped through Croatia, Greece and Italy. Despite my complete lack of photography knowledge or interest in taking anything more than snapshots at the time, the Little Venice area of Mykonos is stunning.

Red

Escadaria Selarón

On my fourth trip to Rio, I still hadn’t seen it all. The Escadaria Selarón had burrowed into my pop culture consciousness thanks to Snoop Dogg, and seeing it for myself for the first time drove home why a superstar would choose this setting for a music video called “Beautiful.” It’s truly a living work of art.

Now for the part where I tag 5 other bloggers. I would love to see shots from these wonderful photographers who I haven’t seen nominated yet:

Ayngelina of Bacon is Magic
Eileen of Bearshapedsphere
Lady of A Lady in London
Oneika of Oneika the Traveller
Rob of South America ME

If you haven’t been nominated but want to participate, do it! It’s the internet, there are no rules here. And then comment with a link because I’d love to see your colorful photos.

Great shots Emily! I really like the white photograph. I wouldn’t mind a meal at one of those tables.

Thanks! I wouldn’t have minded a meal there either, although I’m sure all those restaurants are criminally overpriced. Luckily the view was free :)

  2. Clare says:

Love the blue. Did you really take that? It is awesome!

  3. James says:

The white is just awesome. The buildings are standing just before the sea water. It’s really great and adventurous, especially at the stormy night!

  4. Looooooove these, especially the yellow! ;-)

I spent the day looking thru my photos to submit. i don’t even have a blog yet! but working on it right now, hope to be up by next week. I have enjoyed just finding your blog tonight. My husband is also from Chile, but we live in the US. I have spent lots of time in Santiago and Vitacura. Love it there!

Nice, good luck getting the blog set up! As for the image, you need to go to gravatar.com and upload a gravatar for yourself. That same image will show up on a lot of different sites as many people use gravatar in their comments.

Considering it’s a cold, grey day in Santiago today, I really wouldn’t mind being in either California or Rio for a little sunshine. Guess photos will have to suffice for now.

  10. Heather says:

I could stare at your blue photo all day! My boss might not like that though O:-)

  11. Gina says:

Love the red photograph. I hadn’t heard of that place before!

  12. Ayngelina says:

That blue photo is INSANE! You have to win blue.

  13. Will Peach says:

Excellent concept of taking the various photos with a theme, the red one is what really stands out for me. Total pop of colour.

    • Emily in Chile says:

Thanks! I do love the colors in that staircase – the blue, green and yellow of Brazil on the stairs themselves are nice, but the red on the walls really makes the scene.

  14. These are all great! Very creative ways to highlight the color.

  15. Great pics…Loved the first one especially. Reminded me of when we visited the Georgia Aquarium. We were just in Monterey, and didn’t get to see theirs…

  16. I get mesmerized by jellyfish, too — cool photo. I like all of your choices, but WHITE makes me want to be sitting at one of those tables enjoying the Little Venice area of Mykonos. Good luck in the competition.

  17. Abby says:
